Historical Background
During the Panathenaia, dedication of the peplos to Athena was the most important event. It was woven by girls of marriageable age and women from noble families, who started weaving at the autumn festival of the Chalkeia nine months before the Panathenaia. This suffron-dyed peplos was typically woven with scenes from the Gigantomachy. At the Panathenaic procession, it was attached to a float as the mast and carried to the Akropolis, where the Arkhon Basileus placed it on the cult statue.
